The Huygens Surface Science Package (SSP) comprised 9 separate sensors designed to characterise the surface of Titan at the Probe landing site and to make additional measurements during atmospheric descent. First results from these sensors will be presented with special emphasis on the Impact Penetrometer, the Tiltmeter, measuring probe motion, and the Acoustic Sounder. The SSP results have implications both for the behaviour of the Huygens probe during its descent and for the properties of Titan's atmosphere and surface. Some inferences from the results for characteristics of the material on the surface of Titan will be considered. Funding for SSP in the UK by PPARC is acknowledged.
