Our thinking about cosmic evolution and intelligent life in the universe often reflects one or both of two familiar paradigms: (1) that of local evolution to higher levels of organization and thermodynamic efficiency, culminating in intelligent life and its works, and (2) that of increasing universal entropy, implying the eventual termination of intelligent life and its works. While these paradigms are compatible in terms of physical laws, they have divergent philosophical implications for our conception of the role and ultimate fate of intelligent life in the universe. Adding another stage to the conventional paradigm of cosmic evolution - a stage here called conscious entropy control - may be a way to bridge that divergence, and to suggest a more meaningful role and future for intelligent life. According to our present understanding of physical law, however, even the most powerful civilizations will encounter limits to the expansion of conscious entropy control. Inter-species communications could allow cooperation among civilizations to expand the volume of conscious entropy control. But even cooperating civilizations will have to find some way to escape the implications of eventual total universal entropy if they aspire to eternal existence. How to do this may be the ultimate question to be discussed by communicating technological civilizations.
