The Einstein equations are integrated for a gravitating plane slab of finite thickness whose equation of state is that assumed for the range of densities characteristic of white dwarfs and neutron stars. Concrete configurations are computed for central densities ranging from 1.965 million g/cu cm to 6.295 by 10 to the 18th power g/cu cm; the thickness of the slab and the 'limit' surface mass density are obtained for each central density. Analysis of the results shows that a static configuration with plane symmetry is characterized by a singular surface which is always located beyond the matter distribution. It is found that this singular surface nearly coincides with the outer boundary of the densest configurations, but recedes as the central density decreases and approaches infinity in the Newtonian limit.
