Toroidal Alfven frequencies have recently been used to infer the field line distribution of magnetospheric mass density. However, the distribution has been somewhat uncertain, especially at high latitudes along the field line. Here we present observations of toroidal Alfven waves in the magnetic and electric fields observed by CLUSTER near the perigee of its orbit at L ~ 4.8. These frequencies are measured more precisely than has been done in the past using other spacecraft, allowing a better determination of the field line distribution at high latitudes. The inferred mass density based on these frequencies is very flat within about 22° of the magnetic equator, but increases rapidly at higher latitudes along the field line. Comparison of the inferred mass density to the local electron density and ion densities is also made.
