We present new results from the SINGG H α survey of nearby galaxies, which show that starbursts have a lower fraction of diffuse, warm ionized gas than other star-forming galaxies. We discuss the possible causes of this effect, including a decrease in field-star contributions, absorption of ionizing radiation by dust, and the escape of ionizing radiation from the galaxies.
