The Faint Object Camera (COP) described in the present paper is one of the four axial instruments situated at the F 24 focal plane of NASA's 2.4-m Space Telescope. Placed in an earth-orbiting astronomical observatory, the telescope will permit observations at wavelengths ranging from 1200 to 9000 A with a resolution of better than 0.1 arcsec. The telescope uses the COP to observe stellar (point) and extended sources, using an imaging camera with a photon-event counting detector that provides the minimum required camera format of 200 x 200 pixels. The principal subsystems of the COP are illustrated and discussed.
