The Earth Observing System (EOS) mission, a major component of NASA's "Mission to Planet Earth" program, has undergone many changes since it was officially established in 1990. This paper describes the evolution of the mission from its first conception to what it is today. Some of the significant impacts on the EOS ground system and mission operations are discussed.
