X-Ray Binaries: Stellar Evolution, X-Ray Binaries: Binary Pulsars
Scientific paper
The evolution of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) is reviewed. Evolutionary stages of MXB 1820-30 and MXB 1916-05 are discussed. It is proposed that the progenitor of MXB 1820-30 is a binary where the secondary was an evolved star when it first filled its Roche lobe. LMXB evolution is discussed in connection with the formation of millisecond pulsars (MSP). It is shown that the progenitor of Lyne's 11 ms pulsar in the globular cluster Terzan 5 probably is not a LMXB, but a system where the neutron star has been formed by the accretion-induced collapse of a massive white dwarf.
