A retrospective investigation, covering about ten years during which the M and D method of Geneva photometry has been applied at La Silla, allows an analysis of the variations of atmospheric extinction as a function of several time scales. A summary of the M and D method and of its properties helps to understand the technique used to estimate the daily extinction and its fluctuations. A description of the seasonal variations provides the opportunity to characterize the typical extinction at La Silla. Long term variations as well as the discontinuity following the eruption of the El Chichón volcano allow to estimate the effects of the stratospheric load of volcanic dust.
