The evolution of adiabatic perturbations in Friedmann-Lemaitre universes containing a mixture of noninteracting matter and radiation is analyzed, and the differential equation governing the growth of infinitely long adiabatic fluctuations is derived. A Newtonian treatment is applied to obtain the differential equation for the radiation era; for the case of infinite plane waves, it is found that the equation agrees with the equation derived by Peebles and Yu (1970). The general solution to the differential equation is presented, and an exact solution is obtained for the case of the Einstein-de Sitter universe
