The Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) project will improve most of the performance parameters of the VLA by approximately an order of magnitude. These parameters include continuum sensitivity, frequency coverage, bandwidth, spectral dynamic range and spectral baseline stability. These improvements are enabled by new electronics equipment including a new correlator, new wide-bandwidth receivers, a new wide-bandwidth digital data transmission system and new user software packages. The first VLA antennas have been modified to the EVLA design and the new correlator is scheduled to be commissioned in 2009.
