Scientific paper
The experiments and scientific instruments of the European X-ray observatory Exosat are discussed. The characteristics and operational modes of the satellite are covered, as are the medium-energy experiment, the physical parameters and function of the imaging telescope and gas-scintillation proportional counter, and the projected studies of X-ray sources, including detection, spectroscopy, and variability. The medium energy experiment's objective is to determine the shape of the continuum from 1 to 50 keV, estimate the degree of interstellar absorption for heavily cut-off sources, detect spectral lines of iron, silicon, and sulfur, and study spectral variability.
