Evidence for a plasma plume originating at Europa was first reported by Intriligator and Miller who analyzed data from Pioneer 10. The plasma in this plume or wake region appears to be accelerated at Europa to corotational velocities and to slowly drift outwards. Galileo has passed repeatedly through the region just exterior to the Europa orbit and frequently sees a very characteristic disturbance that appears to be the magnetic counterpart of the Europa plasma plume. This feature is seen well outside of the orbit of Europa and shows that there is a significant outflow of plasma in the region of the magnetosphere around 10 RJ.
