The paper describes the entropy of a cratered surface given by analogy with entropy of the information theory. The saturation, defined as the ratio between the area covered by craters of diameter D and the total observed area, is adopted as a measure of the probability of finding a portion of a planetary surface covered by craters of the given diameter D. The meaning of such a new function is compared with statistical approaches to the study of the cratering, and applications to Mercury are also discussed.
