The present knowledge of Io based on Voyager data is reviewed. The tidal energy which is the source of Io's volcanism is explained, and the important volcanic features of the satellite's surface was described. The chemistry of Io's surface and its relation to the volcanism is addressed. The two types of eruption which occur on Io are discussed along with the torus-shaped cloud of matter produced by Io which interacts with Jupiter. Finally, the location and physical nature of Io's hot spots is considered.
