Stars end their nuclear-burning lifetimes as compact objects, either white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes, depending upon their mass. For binary stars, this can be the start of a significant new evolutionary phase involving the transfer of both mass and angular momentum between the stellar components. A series of recently launched X-ray astronomy missions (the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, and XMM-Newton) have opened a new window onto these objects. I will review selected advances in our understanding of these stellar endpoints.
