Alfven (1968) has proposed a simple neutral sheet model with strictly antiparallel fields. Cowley (1973) showed that the electric field of a model of this type is quite distorted from the uniform field assumed by Alfven. In the present paper, the Alfven model is extended to the time dependent case, and the behavior of the electric field in such a time dependent structure is analyzed. A differential equation is derived which describes the behavior of the total electric field in a simple model of a magnetic neutral sheet. Possible applications of the equation to geophysical and astronomical problems are examined.
