In the present paper, a solution to the two-dimensional problem of the interaction between a plasma stream and a magnetic field is used as a basis to determine the electric field distribution along the magnetospheric tail and its dependence on the direction of the magnetic field and on the plasma parameters in the transition region. The use of a plane geometry implies that the results are limited to regions of the tail where the linear dimension of a rarefaction wave is less than the tail radius.
