CRL 2688 is a bipolar reflection nebula surrounding a post-asymptoticgiant branch star and is in transition to becoming a planetary nebula.Ground-based near-IR molecular imaging suggests dramatically differentmorphology than seen in the optical and near-IR continuum. A dustymolecular torus apparently surrounds the central star. In addition, the reflection nebula is highly polarized, and therefore provides anideal object with which to demonstrate the unique polarimetriccapability of NICMOS. Our observations will provide high resolutionimaging polarimetry, and Pa_alpha and H_2 line imaging. The narrowband images will reveal dramatically different morphology while theimaging polarimetry will constrain the location and number ofilluminating sources --- the optical WFPC2 image suggests thatmultiple "search-light" beams illuminate the scattering dust. Thelocation and distribution of the scattered light compared with theOptical/IR colors will also constrain the nature of the scatteringdust. The line imaging, especially the H_2 images, will provide cluesto the origin and excitation of the molecular gas, which apparentlylies beyond the region of enhanced dust density as found in themid-IR.
