Measurements by the satellite-borne SSU and LIMS instruments are used to infer that circulation integrals around isopleths of potential vorticity on an isentropic surface can be computed with good precision from satellite data. An equation for the time derivative of a circulation integral involves a radiative term. When derived from SSU data, this term exhibits a marked positive bias with respect to the time derivative, a main cause of which is the limited vertical resolution of the SSU. When this bias is allowed for, the observational results support a conclusion reached in a companion paper: viz that radiation is a major contributor to the formation of a main vortex/surf-zone in the average distribution of potential vorticity.
