The paper is concerned with the effect of density stratification and temperature boundary conditions, which result from a parameterization of small-scale turbulent convection in spherical layers of a compressible gas, on the onset of large-scale convection. It is shown that an increase in density stratification in the case where temperature is prescribed at layer boundaries usually leads to layer stabilization and a decrease in the horizontal dimension of convective cells. The vertical dimension of convective motions is always equal to the height of the gas layer. A consideration of the final heat conductivity of the masses surrounding the convective layer leads to a relaxation of the boundary conditions, which, in turn, results in layer destabilization and an increase in the scale of convective motions.
