The variability of F2-layer critical frequencies during the earthquakes of 1976 and 1984 in the Gazli region is analyzed. Irrespective of the geomagnetic situation, the spectral density S of the deviations of the critical frequencies from the smooth diurnal trend proves to increase markedly, with periods of 1.5-2.5 h a day, before the earthquake. The values of S on the day of the earthquake are small for all periods. The effect found is observed at stations near the epicenter.
