The effect of finite height resolution of a partial-reflection sounder in differential-phase and differential-amplitude observations was investigated by numerically simulating data from a number of such soundings for a given electron density profile and collision frequency profile and the experimental parameters of the 2.66 MHz partial reflection sounder at Ottawa. Single- and multiple-scatter models were studied. For the differential amplitude measurements, the amplitude ratios are strongly dependent on the height variation of the reflection coefficients but independent of the scattering model. The differential phase data, however, are strongly influenced by the type of scattering as well.
