There is a well known 11um feature observed in the spectra of carbon stars which is attributed to silicon carbide (SiC). Many studies of this feature have been performed, but the intrinsic nature of the dust remains a mystery. This is due, in part, to the previously published SiC optical constants, which contain errors mostly incurred through splicing datasets and do not adequately represent the bulk physical properties of the cubic structure (β polytype) of SiC dominantly found around carbon stars. Using new uncompromised optical constants for β - and α -SiC, we investigate the effects of parameters on the spectrum expected from dust around carbon stars. Using a radiative transfer modeling, we show that MRN spherical grains of SiC cannot account for the observed features. We determine the combination of grains size and grain shape needed to give rise to the observed 11.3um feature.
