It has been reported that strong intensity fluctuations of three radio sources were observed during occultation by the ion tails of comets Kohoutek and Halley. The authors have analysed an extensive data base in an attempt to correlate an increase in scintillation index with occultation by the ion tails of many comets during the period 1978 May - 1981 March. No such correlation was observed. The authors discuss some weakness of the earlier reports and conclude that the reality of the effect remains in doubt.
