Experimental results on the E-scattering phenomenon were obtained using ground-based vertical sounding at the Moscow station. The detection of this phenomenon in the midlatitude ionosphere by this sounding technique was made possible by the extension of the receiver range of the SP-3 ionosonde to 100 kHz and the reduction of the transmitter pulse duration to 30 microsec. A semiquantitative interpretation of the E-scattering phenomenon is presented, noting that it is connected with short-wave backscattering by the irregular structure of the E-region.
