The profiles of the forbidden O II emission lines have been observed at
many positions over the giant filamentary shell N 51 D. Evidence is
presented which suggests that this nebula could either be an expanding
spherical shell driven by energetic stellar winds or more likely a
supernova remnant approaching fossilization.
