The discovery of a numerical relation between the solar wind and the generation of the power that drives auroras and other disturbances of the geomagnetic field is reported. Consideration is given to the solar-wind-magnetosphere generator, the field-aligned currents which induce electric fields across the auroral oval, the westward and eastward electrojets, and the dynamic of substorms. The possibility of predicting auroral activity and intensity is discussed.
