The dust in the coma of P/Halley was studied by polarimetry in narrow band filters. Observations obtained before and after perihelion are discussed; the range covered in phase angle is 18 to 66 deg. The polarization vector is perpendicular to the scattering plane when the phase angle is greater than a critical value, and parallel to that plane otherwise. This value = 22 deg + or - 2 deg for P/Halley. The slope near the cross-over yields an albedo lower than 0.05. In the continuum, the polarization is mostly independent of wavelength before perihelion, but after perihelion it decreases slowly from the red to the blue. A depolarization is clearly observed in the emission bands, as expected. The data are best explained by single and multiple scattering on large (over 2 microns) dark, irregular grains.
