Colour-magnitude diagrams are used to interpret 1.2-, 1.6- and 2.2-μm images of a 1° × 2° area of sky including the Galactic Centre. Using these data we present a map of the interstellar absorption as well as the number distribution of stars as a function of both angular distance from the Galactic Centre, and apparent magnitude. We show that the proportion of luminous stars increases toward the Galactic Centre. Using models of the distribution of stars within the disc we conclude that the contribution of the disc to our sample is negligible.
