Fan beam observations with an E-W resolution of 11arcsec.4 of NGC 4594 in the 21-cm line, made with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, are reported. The results are presented in the form of a position-velocity contour map. A model is proposed which reproduces the gross properties of the H I distribution. The relative H I content is very much lower for this galaxy than for other Sa galaxies and is lower than for H I-rich ellipticals. The H I distribution suggests that only gas outside the optical bulge has been able to survive. Mechanisms causing the removal of gas from the spheroid of the galaxy are briefly discussed.
