The young cluster NGC 654 is studied using UBV photographic photometry with a view to determining the distribution of interstellar matter in a region where star formation recently occurred. NGC 654 is found to be enclosed in a shell of interstellar matter of mass 1500M &sun;. The mass of all stars in the cluster is 4000M &sun;.
