The distance to the Lupus dark cloud complex is determined using photometric and spectroscopic observations of 31 field stars. Assuming each cloud is roughly the same distance, a plot of extinction vs. distance for the field stars gives a distance of 140 +/- 20 pc to the complex. Our distance is consistent with previous estimates but at the lower end of the range. In addition, one of the presumed field stars has now appeared to be a previously uncatalogued pre-main sequence star due to its weak Hα emission and far-infrared excess.
