Hst Proposal Id #5407 Interstellar Medium Circumstellar Matter

Scientific paper

We propose to make a direct imaging of the disk observed around the star 68 Oph at the Pic du Midi Observatory. The high quality data produced by the high resolution of the anti-blooming WFPC2 will permit to reach 3 goals: i) as 68 Oph is the component of a binary system, with the WFPC2 it will be possible to measure the characteristics of the binary (separation and position angle) as well as to make an accurate photometry of the two components; ii) the inner boundary of the disk will be directly observed with short exposure times; iii) long exposure times will probe its outer extension. The same observations will be done on the reference star 4 Aql which pictures will be used for the data reduction. Besides, we propose to detect the possible gaseous disk around Oph 68 through very sensitive UV spectral signatures with the unprecedented resolution and sensitivity of the GHRS. This is absolutely needed to provide disk hydrodynamical models and disk interacting with binaries models with new sets of data and to study the only one complementary example of proto-planetary disk to the BETA-Pictoris one.
