The author criticises the prevailing opinion that the old "Permanent
Spot" of Jupiter was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1664. An analysis of
the available sources reaffirms the primacy of J. D. Cassini's discovery
of 1665, and strengthens the conviction of the identity between the spot
of the seventeenth century and the present Great Red Spot.
