We have recently determined the first DIRECT distance to a detached eclipsing binary system in M33, which was found by the DIRECT Project. Measurement of radial velocity curves of such systems is a classical method for determining accurate, fundamental distances. However, our result yielded a distance 13% longer than the Key Project distance to M33. To resolve this 2.5σ discrepancy and verify our result, we propose to obtain a precise, independent of other methods distance to a second system in M33 with GMOS spectroscopy. Determining an accurate distance to M33, a vital stepping-stone in the extragalactic distance ladder, will help calibrate the Cepheid period luminosity relation and thus resolve the ongoing controversy about the distance scale, with its ramifications for cosmology and stellar ages.
