The optical system of LAMOST consists of a reflecting Schmidt correcting plate MA and a spherical primary mirror MB. Both MA and MB are segmented mirrors. Each segment is a hexagonal sub-mirror with a 1.1-m diagonal. This paper calculates the detailed diffraction energy distribution of the optical system in observing different sky areas and fields when the star is on the meridian. It also calculates the diffraction energy distribution of the optical system when MB is a single 6-m mirror while MA is kept unchanged and when each segment of MA andMB is a 1.5-m hexagonal sub-mirror. Through analyzing the calculations, the reason of the sub-mirror size selection is justified.
