Eighteen coals, one crude oil, and other samples of fossil organic matter were extracted with solvents and the hydrocarbon fraction was separated in each case by chromatography and analysed by gas chromatography. The coals ranged in degree of metamorphism from a soft brown coal to a partly graphitized meta-anthracite, and in age from Tertiary to Permian. Evidence was obtained that with increasing metamorphism a general decrease takes place in the odd : even concentration ratios, and in the average mol. wt., of the n-alkanes having carbon numbers from C 23 to C 33 . These changes are particularly pronounced in the brown coal-subbituminous coal range and are not directly related to age. The paraffin hydrocarbon distribution changes from a very marked odd-carbon number preference in brown coals, as in living plant waxes, to a smooth distribution in high-rank bituminous coals, like that in some crude oils. It is suggested that changes similar to these take place in the process of formation of petroleum from plant lipids.
