The Fluid Science Laboratory (FSL) offers the basic structure to perform a large variety of different fluid physics experiments on the ISS. The FSL Core Facility is equipped with a complex optical diagnostic system, which includes several interferometers and holographic systems. The fluid cell itself as well as the experiment specific sensorics, optical diagnostics and actuators will be accommodated inside a so-called Experiment Container (EC), which has a volume of 400 x 270 x 280 mm. The complement of the first 3 Experiment Containers, which are currently under development, are identified by the following acronyms and will cover various scientific fields: - GEOFLOW: Simulation of Geophysical Fluid Flow (Team co-ordinator: Prof. Ch. Egbers), - FASES: Studies of Emulsion Stability (Team co-ordinator: Prof. A. Passerone), and - CIMEX: Convection and Interfacial Mass Exchange (Team co-ordinator: Prof. J.-C. Legros). In the paper the development approach and status of the hardware for these first FSL experiments is described. Emphasis is put on the outline of the modular design concept of the EC's, that is needed to serve long-term operation in space, on-orbit re-configuration and maintenance. The modular design is suitable also to accommodate and to perform several similar experiments on a single EC, reducing upload-download mass from ISS. In addition the design concepts of the FSL EC reflect modularity and commonality aspects as far as possible in order to facilitate high performance in combination with a high degree of operational flexibility to be performed within a cost efficient development process. Also the upcoming future generations of FSL experiments shall benefit from the generic EC baseline design. IAF_01.doc18.06.02
