Austin Peay State University is a small liberal arts state university (less than 10,000 full time equivalent students) located in north central Tennessee. Over the past five years the university has started to develop a two track astronomy program. The first phase was limited by the existing faculty to the development of an astronomy minor for non-science majors. The upper level lecture courses were nonmathematical with the observationally based courses emphasizing topics in basic astronomical equipment and astrophotography. Phase One culminates this summer with the construction of a small observatory hosting a 16” Meade RCX400 telescope in a 16’ Ash dome and the submission of an NSF CCLI grant proposal for the purchase of a number of small telescopes as well as astrophotography and laboratory equipment. With the addition of new faculty this year we have begun Phase Two aimed at developing a professional preparation program. Mathematically rigorous courses such as astrophysics are being added to the curriculum. We will also be adding an astronomical instrumentation course to provide students with a solid footing in the techniques of photometry, astrometry and spectroscopy. To enhance the research component to our program we are applying for an NSF PREST grant to build a 32” Ritchey-Chrétien telescope at the new observatory site. Our progress to date and further details of our future plans will be discussed.
