As a broad band spectrometer, the gas scintillation proportional counter represents a new instrument for X-ray astronomy. Results are presented on the development of a large area detector which will fly on the first Spacelab mission. The ability of such a detector to observe detailed spectral features in X-ray sources is compared with that of a classical proportional counter.
