To determine how elliptical galaxies form we have to distinguish between different models of galaxy formation. I have applied the algorithm of Merritt & Saha (1993) for a spherical mass distribution to model the kinematical data for the elliptical galaxy NGC4472. My program employs the model of Merritt & Saha to constrain the distribution function and the gravitational potential. By comparison with present models such methods will help us to differentiate between formation scenarios. I gratefully acknowledege the support of a LJM University fellowship.
