A method is described for exploiting mapping data to determine and calibrate stellar image profiles automatically, resulting in a so-called quasi-magnitude for each image which is linearly related to the normal magnitudes. The assumptions underlying the method are discussed, and a specific example based on a small sample of data produced by the old GALAXY machine is given. The basis of an algorithm for a simple numerical implementation of the method for arbitrary image profile functions is presented in an appendix.
