Spectroscopic data in the range 3000-3300 A from the equatorial region of Venus have suggested the presence of SO2 in the planet's atmosphere. The spectroscopic data, obtained with a scanner attached to the Cassegrain focus of a 1.52-m telescope, have a resolution of better than 2.5 A. Identification of the SO2 is based on a suggestive rather than definitive relationship between the residual features of the Venusian spectra and laboratory absorption studies of SO2. A close fit between the Venusian data and CS2 absorption bands is also reported.
