The role of sputtering in the destruction of dust grains in interstellar space is investigated. For sputtering by collisions with low-energy particles (a few eV), it is shown that no existing theories are adequate for predicting sputtering yields and that empirical yields derived from experiment must be used. Sputtering yields are derived for bombarding particles in the keV and MeV range by using the sputtering theory of Pease. The importance of thermal spikes is investigated. The interaction of cosmic rays with ice grains is also considered. Also considered are destruction by grain surface reactions, grain-grain collisions, and photodesorption, and surface recombination, heavy element depletion, and mantle growth.
