This paper discusses the design principles of the Central-Axis Reflector (ZAS), a segmented-mirror telescope designed to produce large light-gathering areas, with particular attention given to the optical system and the tracking apparatus of the ZAS. The paper also describes the manufacturing method for the primary mirror of the ZAS, the structure of the mirror bodies, the grinding and polishing method, and the structures and procedures used for mounting and adjustment of the individual mirror bodies. Consideration is also given to sensors and control systems, the optical path of the incident light, and a protecting dome. A variant of the ZAS, the Central-Axis Inclined Reflector, is also described.
