One of the major efforts for the International Year of Astronomy - 2009 is the development and distribution of the Galileoscope - a high quality, low cost refractor to be distributed worldwide, with the goal of providing one million people with the opportunity to use and own a telescope of their own. This presentation will describe the design and production process that has been put in place to make this program a reality, and will include the user requirements, design specifications, construction details, instrument capabilities, and uses for the Galileoscope. The team developing the instrument includes individuals with backgrounds in astronomy education, astronomy popularization, education and outreach, instrument development and commercialization, and a manufacturing partner with extensive experience in large-volume, high quality product development. These skills were essential in creating a Galileoscope that will meet the needs and wishes of a broad audience, while meeting tight price and delivery constraints.
