Data on the angular separation between the lobes of double radio sources associated with extragalactic, mostly quasi-stellar, objects available in the literature have been used to derive an empirical angular maximum-separation curve as a function of redshift. Cosmological models with different deceleration parameters allow the translation of this curve into linear maximum-separation curves that can be compared with the predictions of theoretical models involving a single ejection of two plasmons. It is found that agreement can be achieved only if the ambient medium has a density that is significantly below closure density and if the life span of the plasmons is limited by synchrotron and inverse Compton losses. The former result is inconsistent with the physical basis of the models, the latter with observations. By contrast, more recent and more complex models, involving in situ resupply of relativistic electrons as well as multiple plasmon ejections, can be brought into agreement with the present interpretation of observational data. Finally, a comment is made on the cosmological redshift of QSO 1442+10.
