The quasar sky density near a sample of companions of bright spiral galaxies has been estimated by Arp (1981, 1982) to be 10-30 times the canonical density of quasars in control fields, which would support the hypothesis of a physical relation between quasars and these galaxies. It has been suggested, however, that Arp's statistical analysis is on some points incorrect and affected by selection effects due to vague sample definition, which can easily lead to an overestimate of the density. Therefore, a simple calculation has been made to estimate the density of quasars near companion galaxies using a complete sample of 32 companions as test points. It is shown that a reliable estimate of the density can only be made if the nearest-neighbor distances are known for all companions in the complete sample and that any definite conclusions about the quasar surface density near Arp's companion galaxies are premature.
