Cosmological data now imply that the known particles make up only about 4% of the universe, with the rest composed of dark matter and dark energy. We therefore live in interesting times: although the amounts of dark matter and dark energy are becoming precisely known, their microscopic identities are a complete mystery. I will describe the recent progress leading to this peculiar state of affairs, some of the outstanding problems, and the prospects for shedding light on the dark universe through future probes at the interface of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology.
